Bee-Powered Crop Protection: Shielding Farms from Elephant Intrusions

We've joined forces with the Friedking Conservation Fund in Tanzania's Makao region to implement an innovative method of crop protection: a connected fence of 51 beehives. These beehives, suspended on lines encircling the fields, have proven to be remarkably effective. After just one season, local farmers are reporting significant benefits.
The secret lies in the fact that elephants, being naturally averse to bees, are now steering clear of the bee-guarded crops. This has been a game-changer for the farmers, as their fields are no longer under threat from these massive mammals. The beehives are designed to swing on the wire, working up the bees when an elephant disturbs the fence as it tries to get into farmland.
In addition to this successful crop protection strategy, we've also provided tailored training in beekeeping to the local farmers. This way, they not only safeguard their crops but also get to enjoy the sweet rewards of honey production. It's a win-win for both the farmers and the elephants.
